Teaching the N-Word

Sorry for my previous post this is the full blog of the story. "Teaching the N-Word" centers around an African American professor's discussions about race relations in numerous aspects of life. The professor talks to his all white students about the use of the N-word in everyday life and in the professors personal one as well. I found the story interesting to read because I've personally thought about the subject numerous times. Although it never really occurred to me what other ethnicity's thought about this particular subject so this story was quiet fascinating. It clearly was trying to reach all individuals who were curious about race relations by probing sensitive topics. This story was truly intriguing showing how racial topics didn't have to be taboo and could be discussed properly.

  1. Wow, this is a really sensitive topic. I can truly relate to author Emily Bernard and T Birds feelings as I am of Asian Descent. Too often I assume my class mates and professors already think that my English is fast, broken, or jittery. A-self racial slur fills my imagination before I even begin a conversation. Perhaps it's just me, until then maybe having public discussions can help us understand more. As it effects all no matter what Color we are, Teaching the N-Word gives me insight never known before. Obviously we all wonder, Fascinating it is.

  2. I always wondered how the word would affect someone even when it was being used in the correct context. For Emily, it caused a reaction in her even when it was the tittle of the book. I am Mexican and I think I would have a reaction to any racial slur regardless of context. I wonder what would it have been like if there was an African American in her classroom. How would the discussion develop? Especially if there was a generation gap between the teacher and the student.

  3. This essay really made me see how some people can feel things that might not ever come to our attention. Even years after starting the N-word many our still effected by it, and it's sad. I am white and my fiancee is black. He is a really laid back care-free man and he says he doesn't mind if people call him that word, but I wonder how it truely makes him or anyone else feel.It shows how the actions of some can effect many people and they probably will never know it.

  4. I always wonder if the N-word ever bother anyone and does anyone take it offensively. I have several of black friends and they said it doesn't bother them at all if someone was to say it. Well at least not towards them for them to take it the wrong way. This story was a good story to read. It shows the relationship between the professor and the students. Some students are comfortable to say the N-word and some isn't comfortable to say. Or even if someone says it and they don't look at her in the eye because they are not comfortable. It shows that some people is not comfortable to say it and it is understandable because they don't want to offend anyone.

  5. the story spoke of things that we are not comfortable speaking about to everyday people. we may have friends of different races that we can break those boundaries with but for the most part this topic remains a no-no. i am not found of the word and try to never use it, but like the author points out; simply never saying the word does not make it go away. i think she was trying to teach this to her students and posibly hope that with time the word would seem less harsh and possible have a new meaning. for example years, maybe decades ago gay meant happy. now gay means... gay.

    take care

  6. I think in the story Teaching the N word really shows how black and white people feel about the N word. I also found it very intersting in the story how some many white people in class rooms felt very uncomfortable about there black professors talking about the N word and wanted the opinion of a white person take on the N word debate. I still feel like people should talk about it in class rooms today because i feel like people use it in ways just to grab attention. I also found it very interesting how people feel uncomfortable dating people outside their own race. This story really made me realize that people do tend to date people inside their race and some people may be intersted in other people of different races but are sacred based on a certain word that may come out over a disagreement. In a way i think its astonishing but as long as we keep moving forward as a society towards everybody not caring what other people look like thats always a plus :)

    take care you guys
